Brexit Update: EU Scrap Green Cards for UK Drivers

The EU Commission has announced that UK motorists will no longer be required to carry insurance Green Cards when driving in EU countries.

Following dialogue between the Motor Insurance Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) and the EU Commission, the EU agreed that the UK could be part of a Green Card free circulation area. This area covers all European Economic Area (EEA) countries (EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). The EU will confirm when the UK will be admitted into the Green Card free circulation zone in the coming days.

The decision is excellent news for UK-based moving firms and their Irish counterparts, who will soon be able to travel throughout the EU without carrying any additional documentation.

The Green Card is an international certificate of insurance, proving that the motorist has the proper levels of cover. When Brexit came into effect on 31 January 2021, all UK registered vehicles, including those from Northern Ireland, were legally required to carry a Green Card if they visited another EU country, including the Republic of Ireland.
